5 Reasons Why You Should Elope in southern California

Updated: Feb 24

Southern California's stunning landscapes and beach culture create a perfect location for couples who want a unique wedding experience. If you’re contemplating a small wedding or an elopement, this blog post will delve into five reasons why Southern California is the perfect place to elope, along with helpful tips to make your day unforgettable.

1. Diverse Options of Landscapes

Southern California boasts breathtaking views, from its iconic beaches and cliffs to the desert mountains inland. Think exchanging vows in a cave, camping under the stars in Anzo Borrego Desert or tucked into quaint corners of Little Italy or Old Town in San Diego. Balboa Park is literally begging to be explored and enjoyed. The variety of options ensures that your ceremony is distinct and personal.

2. Intimate and Personalized Experience

My goal is to help design and curate a ceremony that truly reflects who you are as a couple. Southern California features amazing small wedding venues and outdoor locations that are perfect for curating a day that embodies what matters most to you both.

No matter the guest list or location for your wedding adventure, there are so many options. Check out Pond Oaks which welcomes exploring Mount Baldy or the unique airbnbs to stay at for your Death Valley elopement.

A couple holding hands descends brick steps of San Diego County Administration Building, she holds flowers. Sunlit scene conveys joy.

I love Courthouse Elopements because not only are the County Administration Building and Santa Barbara Courthouse stunning, but also super convenient to walk across the street to the Embarcadero and enjoy exploring the boats at San Diego’s Marina or grab a dinner or drink at Miguel's or at Brigantine to catch the sunset or head to Seaport Village.

3. Year-Round Beautiful Weather

Another easy reason to elope in Southern California is the year-round sunshine. On average, we enjoy more than 300 sunny days each year. This means you can plan an outdoor wedding without fear of rain spoiling your plans—especially since average daytime temperatures hover between 60°F and 80°F across all seasons. Eloping in January in perfect sunshine? Count me in!

Simply put, the weather here allows for great flexibility, so if you are aiming for an off-season date, I would definitely consider what location makes the most sense for your needs.

4. Adventurous Activities for Couples

For adventurous couples, eloping in Southern California offers countless activities to make your special day feel so authentic to you. After the ceremony, spend quality time together hiking the scenic trails at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve, where you’ll experience sweeping ocean views. You could also enjoy kayaking in La Jolla Cove—home to the sea lions (ignore the smell, but they are so cute).

Couple dressed in white embraces on a wooden fence in front of rocky cliffs and greenery. Warm colors create a romantic, serene mood.
A couple shares a romantic moment at Annie's Canyon, surrounded by dramatic rock formations and lush greenery.

Whether it is paddleboarding or biking along the coast, your day or multiday elopement can be filled with experiences that celebrate who you are and create memorable stories to think back on in years to come.

5. Affordable and Stress-Free Planning

Eloping can also lead to considerable financial savings compared to traditional large weddings. With fewer guests, you can allocate your budget to experiences that truly excite you. Studies show that couples who opt for smaller weddings can save as much as 50% on their overall budget.

By removing extensive guest lists, seating charts, and other complexities, you can focus on what truly matters—celebrating your love and starting an exciting new chapter together.

There are also environmental benefits to a smaller wedding - less guests flying across the country and working with local vendors means you get to represent your values in your love story.

Final Thoughts

Southern California combines natural beauty, intimate experiences, and plenty of adventure, making it the ultimate destination for couples looking to elope. Whether it’s the beaches, year-round sunny weather, or the chance to create a uniquely personal ceremony, your decision to tie the knot here is bound to be unforgettable.
